ApptioOne, IBM Apptio & TBM

Technology investment
with a clearer purpose

Implement and improve IBM Apptio, including ApptioOne environments, with a practical focus on Technology Business Management. We connect cost models, product structures, source mapping and decision reporting, alongside portfolio tooling where it is needed

The challenge we help you solve

Connect the model to the decisions people make

A useful financial management model depends on clear product and service definitions, dependable sources and understandable allocation logic. We combine discovery and design with implementation, validation and knowledge transfer, so the reporting can be traced and used

Expertise shaped around your environment

Connect technology financial management to the questions your organisation needs to answer. We support IBM Apptio and existing ApptioOne environments through discovery, model design, implementation and enablement. The work brings together finance, technology and business owners so product definitions, source data and allocations can be understood and reviewed. The workstreams below are examples of an agreed engagement, shaped around your platform, data availability and reporting priorities.

Our capabilities

The work behind
the result

Explore the workstreams we can bring into your engagement, from the first assessment through implementation and ownership

01

Decision discovery and source readiness

Establish the decisions the model must support and the information available to support them. We work with finance and technology owners to identify source coverage, reporting periods, stable keys and quality gaps, so implementation starts with an explicit view of what the data can explain.

  • Define audiences, cost questions and reporting acceptance criteria
  • Review source owners, coverage, periods and matching keys
  • Prioritise missing, duplicate and inconsistent data for remediation
02

Cost hierarchy and product structure

Design relationships between financial sources, technology resources, applications, services, products and business consumers. We align terminology and ownership with your operating model, using TBM concepts where appropriate and making local mapping decisions visible to the people who use the reporting.

  • Define cost categories, model layers and product or service ownership
  • Agree stable identifiers and translation mappings between sources
  • Review hierarchy changes and exceptions with finance and technology owners
03

Source mapping and integration design

Prepare the source-to-model path for the datasets included in scope. This can cover finance, asset, application, workforce or consumption information where it is available and approved. We document transformation logic, refresh responsibilities and error handling before implementing the agreed data flows.

  • Map source fields to model inputs and document transformation logic
  • Agree ingestion, refresh, access and exception handling arrangements
  • Validate joins, mappings and source-to-report lineage
04

Apptio configuration and allocation logic

Translate the agreed design into the Apptio environment and modules in scope. Allocation rules connect source costs to the resources and consumers they represent, using documented drivers and relationships. We review assumptions with the accountable owners rather than allowing them to remain hidden in configuration.

  • Configure agreed tables, model relationships and reporting measures
  • Implement and document allocation drivers, rules and exceptions
  • Review configuration through the available development and release process
05

Model validation and decision reporting

Test whether the model behaves as designed and whether its outputs answer the agreed questions. We reconcile inputs and cost flows, investigate unallocated values and review reports with their intended audience. Budget, forecast, variance or unit-cost measures are included where the required sources and definitions are agreed.

  • Reconcile source totals, allocation flows and reporting periods
  • Investigate unmatched records, duplicate mappings and unallocated costs
  • Review report definitions, drill-through paths and acceptance evidence
06

Governance, enablement and portfolio context

Establish how the model will be maintained and used after implementation. Named owners, review cycles and practical guidance connect the financial reporting to business discussion. Where portfolio tooling is included, we agree how cost and investment views relate to demand, capacity and delivery without conflating their measures.

  • Define source, model, report and business decision ownership
  • Create refresh, review, change control and handover guidance
  • Enable users and agree any links to portfolio decision processes

Evidence and acceptance

Clear checkpoints
before the next step

Review what has been delivered, the decisions still needed and who will own the result

  1. A decision and source register

Documented reporting questions, source definitions, owners, periods, coverage and quality findings, with a prioritised list of prerequisites for the model in scope.

  2. An agreed model design

A cost and product hierarchy, stable keys, source mappings and allocation design, with the assumptions, driver choices and owner approvals recorded.

  3. Traceable configuration and validation

Configuration records and test evidence for the agreed data flows and model behaviour, including reconciliations, exception findings and the treatment of unallocated values.

  4. Reporting reviewed with its audience

Report specifications and review evidence covering definitions, source periods, allocation context and the routes from summary figures to supporting detail.

  5. A workable ownership and handover plan

Named responsibilities, operating guidance and knowledge transfer for refreshes, model changes, reporting reviews and unresolved improvements, aligned with the agreed support arrangement.

Questions about this service

More detail
before you decide

Bring your current environment, challenge and priorities to the first conversation

Discuss this service
Can we begin before all of our source data is complete?

Yes. Discovery can establish what is available, which decisions it supports and where the gaps matter. We agree a useful initial boundary and make any limitations or proxy drivers explicit. Expanding the model depends on the additional source information and ownership required, rather than treating an incomplete dataset as a complete cost view.

Can you work with an existing ApptioOne environment?

Yes. We can assess the current configuration, sources, allocation logic and reporting before recommending changes. The implementation approach is based on the IBM Apptio environment, modules, access and release arrangements you have, with new configuration or integration work agreed as part of the scope.

How are allocation rules chosen and checked?

Finance, technology and business owners agree the relationships and drivers that represent how costs should be assigned. We document the rationale, data dependencies and exceptions, then reconcile source totals and review how value flows through the model. Unallocated values and unexpected results remain visible for investigation and an owner decision.

Can the model support showback, chargeback or unit-cost reporting?

These can be considered within an agreed reporting scope. They require clear cost definitions, allocation policy, consumption measures and business ownership. Chargeback also needs an agreed financial process. We assess those prerequisites with your team and validate the chosen reporting approach before it is used for operational decisions.

How does TBM connect with portfolio tooling?

TBM gives context to technology costs and investment; portfolio tooling helps manage demand, priorities, capacity and delivery. An engagement can align product identifiers and decision views across them while keeping the definitions of each measure clear. Any data exchange, refresh process or platform configuration is separately scoped and validated.
